October 2024 school news

The month of October has been full of activity at St. Brendan’s N.S.

The children have been doing walks every Monday and Tuesday afternoon as part of the  Let’s Get Cork Walking Campaign.

The school is now taking part in the Active Flag initiative. The children in the senior room have been busy practicing their relay racing skills.

On the 10th of October the children in the senior room took part in a hymn service in Bandon. They prepared for this event by practicing singing of the hymns each day in school and also when we welcomed in children from St. James’s in Durrus, Scoil Mathias in Ballydehob and Abbeystrewry National School near Skibbereen.

The choir practice with these other schools was led by Peter Stobart and was an enjoyable experience for everyone.

The children in the junior room got the opportunity to pick the potatoes from the school garden. This was exciting as we did not expect the yield to be so fruitful.

There were also carrots and parsnips picked from the garden. The children were supported and guided in the making of a lovely nutritious soup and also platefuls of fresh potatoes with butter for all in the school to enjoy.

Everyone at St. Brendan’s N.S is excited that we have been approved for the eTwinning arts Project funded by Léargas.

This is a unique opportunity for all the children at the school to reap the benefits of an Arts Week in early December.  This Arts Week is intended to support the Social and Emotional Learning of all the children in school and is connected to the school’s focus of wellbeing.

The children are taking part in a host of exciting activities during this week.

On Monday the children in the senior room will be taking part in Drama workshops on immigration and diversity.

On Tuesday there will be an African Drumming workshop for all classes.

On Wednesday the senior room will be travelling to a pottery workshop in Kinsale with Loch Mór pottery and they will also be creating a sculpture and decorate tiles for a mosaic freeze.

All are very excited about the trip to the Everyman Theatre in Cork on Thursday of Arts Week to see a  pantomime of Little Red Riding Hood!

Finally on Friday there will be an official unveiling of the multicultural mural on the wall of our playground painted by the students.

It promises to be a busy week full of creativity and new learning experiences.

We are grateful to all of those people who donated to our recent Cash for Clobber fundraiser in the school. We hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween.
