April 2026 School News

The children at St. Brendan’s N.S have settled in the school after a nice Easter break. Recently the children were engrossed by an excellent presentation from Bantry Fire Service. The presentation was informative and educational, raising awareness around the potential danger of fires in the home. In the middle of the presentation the firefighters were called out on an emergency and had to leave the school. The children saw first hand how the firefighters are always on a call and it is a very busy job! The children were delighted that later in the day they got to see the Fire Truck at Bantry Fire Station. They also saw how powerful the firehose was! It felt like it was raining! We are all delighted at St. Brendan’s N.S that one of the swifts that lives each summer in the swift boxes at school has returned from its migration, probably to South Africa and is now back at school in Bantry. The children will be able to watch the swifts nesting as we move into the summer and hopefully lay eggs for chicks to hatch. We are very lucky to have cameras inside the swift boxes to allow for this.
Active week was held at school recently. The children did lots of different activities during active week such as Swimming, Rowing, GAA, Golf, Kickboxing, Yoga and games versus the teachers. The hens at school are very popular and they are laying eggs every day. The children love to collect the eggs and take turns bring the eggs home in boxes of six.
It is the time of year to plant in the school garden and the children from the senior room helped bring new compost up to school. They will be carefully watching as the garden begins to bloom over the next few months.
The children in the senior room are busy doing projects on famous Irish people who have had a big influence in the world. The projects include researching about famous sports people, actors and historical figures from Ireland and their influence on Ireland and the world.
Everyone at school are also very busy preparing outfits and doing art project work for our upcoming
Trashion Show in Bantry House on Friday 29 th of May at 5.30pm. The children at St. Brendan’s N.S and the children of St. James’s N.S in Durus will jointly present a Trashion Show on the night. The children are designing all the outfits from Recycled or Re-used materials. It promises to be a lovely evening in Bantry House with music, refreshments, baked goods and a child led fashion show.
Tickets for the event are 20 euros per adult and children go free and can be bought at the door on the night of the event.
There will also be a raffle and winners for this will be announced on the evening of the event. We are looking forward to a fun evening at Bantry House and we look forward to welcoming all who can make the event.
