April 2025 school news

April and May have been eventful at St. Brendan’s N.S.

This year the school is part of the Active Flag initiative and the children have been engaging with physical education, different sports and staying active throughout the school year.

The highlight of the Active Flag Initiative was the Active Week at St. Brendan’s N.S that took place between the 6th and the 9th of May.

The children engaged with many different activities during Active Week.  The activities included  a skipathon, learning on the move and wake up shake up each morning. We did  a hike up to Bantry House and Gardens and also a beach walk. We were very lucky with the weather for Active week with sunshine every day.

This made the outdoor activities such as Orienteering around the school and the Qi Gong in the Sensory Space much more enjoyable.

We would like to thank all of the Coaches who helped us during the Active Week. Karolina led the children on a fun and energetic Zumba session.

The Visit of Tony Stephenson from West Cork Kickboxing Club to the school was a big hit with children. They really enjoyed learning the basic skills of kickboxing and even got to see Tony demonstrate flying kicks and other skills. The teachers had to be very brave to hold the kick pad for Tony’s demonstrations!

Brian Crowley of Bantry GAA club also came in to teach GAA skills to the children.

We are delighted with how well Active Week went and are grateful to Mr. O Donovan at school for organising it.  There were other activities during the week such as Ultimate Frisbee, Penalties on the Principal and of course the highlight which was the Teachers Vs Students dodgeball game.

On May 24th St. Brendan’s N.S held its 3rd annual Wine and Cheese Fundraiser in Bantry House.

It was a lovely evening once again.

The performance of The West Cork Ukrainian Choir and local Musicians Cathal, Richie, John and Fergal entertained everyone on the night. There was Wine, Cheese and local foods donated to be enjoyed also.

We would like to thank all those who supported the event in any way. All proceeds from the event go towards the development of an All Weather playing pitch at school.

As the Summer holidays approach the Sensory Space at school is starting to bloom. The Potato garden is growing fast and the flowers are blossoming. The hens at school are laying eggs each day. We are also very lucky to have swift boxes at school where swifts are nesting. There are cameras inside the nesting boxes and the children were delighted recently to see that eggs are nearly ready to hatch! We look forward to seeing how the chicks get on when they are born in the days ahead.
